Caratunk + Kennebec River Crossing

Made it to Caratunk after 15 mile day from Bald Mountain Brook Lean-to over Pleasant Pond Mountain. Tough hiking lots of rocks and roots especially hard on my feet today. I didn't stop for lunch or normal rest breaks trying to make Caratunk before dark. The Kennebeck River shuttle is here and operates 9-11 am and 2-4 pm. Guy named David is paid by AT to take hikers across river in his canoe. His wife sets up at The crossing and sells cold drinks for a couple bucks.  last night got Burger and fries at Northern Outdoors. Shuttle ride to Sterling Inn. Hot bath Advil neosporin real bed.

Resting Sunday. Six muffins banana bowl of fruit boiled egg coffee big glass of OJ glass of milk for breakfast.  No church in Caratunk. Closest may be in a town 19 miles. Psalm 20 today for my 20th day of AT. Looks like I may have time for Psalms and Proverbs before Springer Mtn. Put my clothes in for wash and dry. Wearing clothes from the hiker clothes shelf. No phone signal in this town.

Schedule for Monday 9am Kennebec River shuttle via canoe complements of AT folks. Should be interesting. 37 miles and the Bigelows between here and Stratton.

jo-Mary Rd food drop - hitch hike

I get to jo-Mary Rd in the 100 Mile Wilderness.  I have a food drop ( 5 gallon bucket with food I have provided to be dropped for me to pick up a few days into the 100 mile "wilderness )

So I get to jo-Mary rd near the end of a day and find my bucket in the woods and sit by the trailhead to sort out.

Out of the woods come a couple of day hikers.  We go through the usual how-u-doing? They are from Central SC and Clemson University.  I say " my son graduated from Clemson" .. " what year " they ask " she says " this man handed your son his diploma " Mr Smith is/was the Registrar at CU. Rides his bicycle to work plays tennis at the indoor facility ..
They have a car park near the trailhead and are going back to their Appalachian Mountain Club location.  hmmmm Things are looking good for a hitch to the highway and closer to Monson for resupply rest. My feet are burned up and I am tired and sore. My phone is dead and my camera battery dead.  So MM Smith make room for me in their car and offer to take me to the highway after getting out the road map and showing me the way to Monson.  We stop at jo-Mary Lake Campground. Mr Smith treats me to a ginger ale.  When  we get to the highway and I get out a pickup truck stops with 5 minutes. When he stops I throw my pack and 5 gallon bucket in the back. Didn't think to ask if he was going to give me a ride. o well :)  Steve says he is going to Milo and we head down the rode.  Steve does a varity of jobs including tree care for property owners.  Along the way I inquire as to good places to eat.  His wife has leftovers for him and he accepts my offer to stop for a meal. Nor East'r homemade burger and sweet potato fries and a couple of COLD buds. :) Another BEST cheeseburger ever! Get some local trivia see bear hunters at the Nor East r  la la la .. Ok Steve takes me out to the edge of whatever town we were in and drops me by the 'band aid' hospital at a service station. Within a few minutes a BMW Z? convertable stops. " dont know if your ( 1975 Jasport D2 external frame pack will fit in my trunk ) it does and the 5 gallon bucket fits between my legs in the front seat. Turns out Bill's BMW was make of course in Greenville/Spartaburg.  Bill lives in Monson and takes me to the Shaw's driveway. Blessings Indeed!  The next day I am at the gas station getting a pizza and there's Bill and his son.  Now I even know a couple locals. funny!

ok that's the jo-Mary hitch hike adventure!  Our Heavenly Father is Mercicul and Gracious beyond compare.  He is our Faithful Provider and Protector .. He delights when we seek refuge in Him!

100 Mile Wilderness Complete! YAY

Wednesday morning August 26th 2015

Finished 100 Mile Wilderness yesterday about 5PM. Hitched a ride into Monson ME with two vacationers from Texas. Spending the night here at Shaw's and doing some catchup on record keeping and journal and email 156 unread :/)

Thunderstorm last night - spectacular - sleeping in the bunk room second floor with windows and door open.  WIND blowing THUNDER and LIGHTING!  The POWER of our CREATOR!

Just finished Shaw's Hiker Breakfast  ..  time to catch up on the journal ...

Katahdin summit.
Made it to Abol Bridge to begin 100 Mile Wilderness
Completed my first 100 miles of AT - 2085 miles to go!
Finished the 100 Mile Wilderness
iPhone battery has been out since Friday
Cannon camera batteries dead. Charger in a box 'somewhere' between SC and ME.
Psalm 16 today .. 16th day of AT Adventure.
Last four days have been hiking in the RAIN. Some of the best hiking days.  Cool and breezy. Hiking with shirt and shorts ..  my feet shoes socks ( all three pair ) have been wet continuously.  Think I will try putting some wet things in my sleeping bag to dry from body heat.
I slept in Lean-to three of the last four nights.  One night I got to the top of a mountain just at dark where Mouse and Sunshine  ( hikers I met at Shaw's ) had pitched a tent.  I put out my foot print with my tent spread out. Unzipped the door and put my mattress and sleeping bag inside.  Got in and zipped up and fell asleep.  Woke up in the middle of the night and looked up at a BLACK sky with brilliant white stars and a half-moon.  God's Creation revealed in a spectacular way!
Maybe twenty hikers here last night and this morning for breakfast. All NOBOs ( Northbound with 115 mies to finish at Katahdin within a few days )  I am the only SOBO ( Southbound hiker )  I will meet a large way of NOBOs that started from GA in April and have to finish before Baxter State Park closes the AT  to Katahdin about October 15th.
Some really interesting people with life stories and AT experiences galore!

I better Save this  rambling before it gets lost ... been there done that!

Pooh Bear & Stache -  thanks for the pictures!
I will have to figure out where this was

14.

I am in Monson ME at Shaw's Hiker Hostel. Made it to jo-Mary Rd yesterday. Hitched in to town for resupply rest time. The AT is a wonderful experience. Tough hiking climbing rock hopping ... lakes and streams to swim fish clam drink along the way! cell phone can be most confusing.  Never no when messages actually send.  Trying to use "send my location" as an update.

Mt. Katahdin was amazing. Hiking with lots of interesting people from all over the world. Started off with four teens down the Hunt Trail jumping down through holes between rocks and climbing up and over a seemingly endless path of obstructions. Caught up with three more youngsters Bug Booger and Jake from Harrisburg PA. Shared a campsite and hiked together until Abol Bridge. I caught a ride into Millinocket to dry out and regroup after we hiked and camped in heavy rain Tuesday. Back on trail 6:30 pm Wednesday hiked until 9:30 pm with headlight to Hurd Lean-to.

wow too much to say and too little time ...  ready to get back to jo-Mary Rd and complete the 100 mile wilderness.
